Bühler opens application center for local grains in Nigeria together with Flour Mills of Nigeria

Addressing food security in Nigeria and beyond

KANO, NIGERIA – EQS Newswire – 11 July 2024 – Bühler, in collaboration with Flour Mills of Nigeria Plc, has opened a grains application center in Nigeria dedicated to processing local and ancient grains. This sustainable and transformative commitment was made based on the need to address food insecurity, not just in Nigeria, but progressively across the African continent. Today around 2.3 billion people in the world live in food insecure conditions, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. With their specific advantages, local grains such as sorghum and millet can play a vital role in improving food security, particularly in Africa. Use of these raw materials is at a low level today, and processing is not developed. To address this challenge, Bühler is opening a dedicated Application & Training Center with research and development capabilities in Kano, Nigeria, together with its founding partner, Flour Mills of Nigeria (FMN), and its collaborating partners, such as Olam Agri.

The main goal is to bring industrial processing of these grains to the next level and thereby contribute to affordable nutrition. “Sustainable food value chains utilizing local grains are the number one priority to develop Africa,” says Johannes Wick, CEO of Bühler’s Grains & Food segment.

“In addition to improving the food value chain, we see great business opportunities with a new category of processed food,” says John Coumantaros, Chairman of the Board of Flour Mills of Nigeria. Commenting on the foreseeable impact of the Application & Training Center, Coumantaros stated: “FMN has always been at the forefront of driving food self-sufficiency in Nigeria and progressively across the continent. The application center is well positioned to sustainably develop local grains, create business opportunities, and provide viable alternatives to some imported raw materials used in production. Therefore, this partnership further demonstrates our consistency in developing local content and in our commitment to feeding and enriching lives, every day.”

Local grains and crops offer many benefits and are therefore a key tool in improving food security. They have high nutrient density with valuable vitamins, minerals, proteins, and fats, are climate tolerant and able to withstand high temperatures and arid conditions, and require less fertilizer and pesticide than other grains. “With these characteristics local grains are ideal plants to be cultivated in Africa, specifically under the conditions of accelerating climate change,” says Ali Hmayed, Head of Bühler’s new Grain Processing Innovation Center (GPIC) in Kano. The main reasons these local grains and crops have not yet been integrated into industrial solutions are complex, ranging from low farming volumes and short shelf life to a lack of process knowledge and equipment. Together with its partners, Bühler is now taking a major step to break through this blockage and is open to further collaborations.

The GPIC is a three-floor building spanning an area of 480 square meters, housing pilot-scale production facilities, research and development labs, and classrooms. The production facility includes all steps of processing, from cleaning and sorting to dehulling, tempering, and milling. The heart of the plant is Bühler`s high-compression AlPesa grinding system. The GPIC will empower customers, researchers, and partners to collaboratively explore cost efficient food processing solutions for local grains such as sorghum, millet, maize, soybeans, and other local crops such as cassava, different types of beans, nuts, and seeds.

In close collaboration with the Bühler African Milling School in Nairobi, Kenya, the GPIC also offers training and education courses on local grains and their advantages and requirements in cultivation and processing. Additionally, this new Application & Training Center will enable Bühler to optimize its processing portfolio for local grains in terms of both performance and cost efficiency. The GPIC is embedded in Bühler’s global network of 25 Application & Training Centers. The first series of trials with customers has already been agreed upon.

Strengthening food security and economy

One key reason for the challenging food situations in Africa is that many regions of the continent are strong importers of grains, mainly wheat and rice. This makes them vulnerable to trade disruptions and foreign exchange rate fluctuations. “Local grains offer many opportunities, not only to increase food security but also to generate new jobs in agriculture and adjacent markets, as well as enabling countries to become more independent from imports,” states Ali Hmayed.

The transformation of the food supply chain in Africa will not happen overnight. “This requires concerted efforts across numerous sectors, including agriculture, processing, recipe development, end-product innovation, and consumer engagement,” says John Coumantaros from FMN.

“Together with our partners, we at Bühler are happy to now contribute to this system change with the aim of ensuring that more people in Africa have access to affordable and healthy food, thereby reducing hunger and malnutrition,” says Bühler’s Johannes Wick.

280 days of war on the Gaza Strip.. Dozens of martyrs and horrific testimonies from Gaza

Israeli aircraft continued their bombing of various areas in the Gaza Strip on the 280th day of the war, leaving a large number of martyrs and wounded.

The Israeli occupation forces committed two massacres against Palestinian families, resulting in 50 martyrs and 54 wounded arriving at hospitals, bringing the death toll from the aggression since October 7 to 38,345 martyrs and 88,295 wounded.

The occupation forces executed a number of citizens in the Al-Zeitoun Girls School near the universities west of Gaza City and arrested others.

Citizens spoke about the spread of dozens of bodies in the streets surrounding the industrial area on Al-Thalathini Street in Gaza City, while the Civil Defense indicated that the number of martyrs recovered from the Shuja’iyya neighborhood during the past two days has risen to sixty, including six from the Al-Maidana family.

The occupation tanks retreated on Friday morning to Street 8 after a three-day incursion into the industrial area.

South Gaza Strip

The occupation re
newed its bombing of the city of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip, resulting in eight martyrs as a result of Israeli bombing that targeted the center of the city of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip.

Two people were injured in a helicopter raid in the Qizan Abu Rashwan area, south of Khan Yunis.

Israel continues its invasion of Rafah for the third consecutive month, and the occupation forces shoot at anyone who tries to enter the city.

The ambulance teams were able to retrieve nine martyrs, including a woman and two of her children in the Tel al-Sultan neighborhood, and a father and his son in the same neighborhood.

Middle of the sector

Four martyrs and wounded were killed when the occupation aircraft targeted the Abu Mustafa family home in the Al-Da’wa area, north of the Al-Nuseirat camp in the central Gaza Strip.

The artillery shelled the north of the Nuseirat and Bureij camps in the central Gaza Strip.

35,000 perform Friday prayers at Al-Aqsa Mosque

Thousands of citizens performed Friday prayers at the blessed Al-Aqsa Mosque, in light of the strict military measures imposed by the Israeli occupation authorities on access to the mosque.

The Islamic Endowments Department in Jerusalem estimated that about 35,000 citizens performed Friday prayers in the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Eyewitnesses reported that the occupation forces deployed their checkpoints in the Old City and at Bab al-Asbat, coinciding with the arrival of citizens to perform prayers, and prevented a number of young men from entering the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Since the start of the comprehensive Israeli aggression against our people in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank, including Jerusalem, in October 2023, the occupation forces have tightened their measures at the gates of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the entrances to the Old City, and sometimes prevent citizens from occupied Jerusalem or Palestinians from the 1948 territories from entering the mosque to perform prayers. They also deprive tens of thousands of citize
ns from the West Bank governorates from entering Jerusalem through their military checkpoints surrounding the city.

Sheltering 6 people – Jerusalemite forced to demolish his own home

The occupation municipality forced the Jerusalemite citizen Walid Edkaidek to demolish his house in Beit Hanina, north of Jerusalem, with his own hands, under the pretext of building without a permit.

Edkidek explained that he was forced to demolish his house, after successive decisions to demolish it, and the impossibility of obtaining a license, under the pretext of building without a license.

He added that he tried to license the house and provide the necessary information, but his requests were rejected.

The house, which is home to 6 people, has been in existence since 2016 and has been fined for ‘unlicensed construction.’

Edkidek pointed out that he had filed objections to the Central Court and then the Supreme Court, in an attempt to prevent the demolition of his house, to no avail.

During the past few days, a commercial facility was demolished in Issawiya, a building in Umm Tuba, and two apartments in the village of Jabal Mukaber.

Gaza Municipality: Israel deliberately made the city uninhabitable

The Gaza City Municipality said that the Israeli army “deliberately targeted vital facilities and infrastructure to make Gaza an unlivable city.”

The municipality added in a statement on Friday that “the occupation has been targeting the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood (in Gaza City) for 9 months, and the industrial area is crowded with displaced people in residential towers.”

She pointed out that “the occupation targeted water tanks, trees, mosques, schools and all vital facilities.”

She confirmed that “35% of the buildings and residential facilities in the Shuja’iyya area, east of Gaza, were completely destroyed.”

She said: “We cannot deliver water to the areas where citizens have been displaced because the infrastructure has been completely destroyed.”

“We urgently need fuel and heavy equipment to respond to relief calls and restore electricity,” she added.

She explained that “about 100,000 tons of waste have accumulated throughout Gaza City, and diseases and epidemics are spreading.”

The Gaza Municipalit
y stated that “there are very limited quantities of food supplies at exorbitant prices that do not meet the minimum needs.”

Earlier today, the Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip said that its crews found the charred bodies of citizens and completely burned homes in the industrial area and the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood in Gaza City after the Israeli army withdrew from the area this morning.

In this context, the government media office in Gaza stated, “We are receiving news of serious atrocities committed by the occupation in the Tel al-Hawa neighborhood in Gaza City.”

He added that “the occupation forces are still stationed in areas despite their withdrawal from Tal al-Hawa and the industrial zone.”

He warned citizens against “moving around the Tal al-Hawa neighborhood and the industrial area despite the occupation’s withdrawal.”

Civil Defense in Gaza: We found charred bodies and completely burned houses in the industrial area and Tal al-Hawa

The Civil Defense in the Gaza Strip said that its crews found charred bodies of Palestinians and completely burned homes in the industrial area and Tel al-Hawa in Gaza City after the Israeli army withdrew from the area.

The Civil Defense added today, Friday, that its crews “have retrieved 18 martyrs so far from the industrial area and Tal al-Hawa, west of Gaza, after the occupation forces’ vehicles withdrew from the area at dawn today.”

He pointed out that “the scene now in the industrial area is very difficult and tragic after the withdrawal of the occupation army from it, as there are dozens of bodies of martyrs scattered in the alleys and inside the destroyed houses, in addition to the burning of many houses that the occupation army set on fire before withdrawing, as our crews are working in partnership with service providers to recover these bodies.”

For his part, the government media office in Gaza said: “We are receiving news of serious atrocities committed by the occupation in the Tel al-Hawa neigh
borhood in Gaza City.”

He added that “the occupation forces are still stationed in areas despite their withdrawal from Tal al-Hawa and the industrial zone.”

He continued: “We warned citizens against moving around the Tal al-Hawa neighborhood and the industrial area despite the occupation’s withdrawal.”

He explained that “there are fears that the fires that broke out in a number of warehouses and houses in Tal al-Hawa will spread.”

“The lack of fuel and the destruction of infrastructure are hindering the recovery of the martyrs in Tal al-Hawa,” he said.

The government media office confirmed that “the occupation wants to force the people of Gaza not to return to the northern Gaza Strip at all.”

The Israeli army destroyed the “Friends of the Patient” hospital in the center of Gaza City, and also destroyed the Mashtaha Tower at Ansar roundabout west of Gaza City in the last invasion.

Local sources said, “Three martyrs, including an infant, were killed after the occupation forces bombed a house in the Al-Mu
fti area, north of the Al-Nuseirat camp in the central Gaza Strip, this morning.”

The sources added that “a number of the injured, including a girl whose injuries were described as serious, were transferred to Al-Awda Hospital in Al-Nuseirat camp as a result of the shelling.”

The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) reported that 14,000 displaced persons are crammed into a school in Deir al-Balah in the central Gaza Strip in harsh conditions.

In the southern Gaza Strip, our correspondent said that Israeli aircraft fired west of Rafah city.

In a separate context, the Israeli army said in a statement on Friday, “Yesterday, Thursday, several rockets were identified as coming from the Beit Hanoun area (northern Gaza) and fell in open areas near southern Israel, and no injuries were reported.”

The statement added: “Then the Israeli Air Force bombed terrorist targets in the area from which the rockets were launched.”

He continued: “The Israeli forces continue their operational
activity based on intelligence information in the Rafah area (south of Gaza), and during the past day our forces were able to eliminate many terrorists and dismantle the terrorist infrastructure in the area.”

The statement concluded: “Based on intelligence information, the Israeli army operating in central Gaza found a weapons production workshop in addition to a large amount of money used in terrorist activity. The terrorists who posed a threat to the forces in the area were also eliminated.”
