UN-backed open letter – including signatories Gillian Anderson and Forest Whitaker – calls on governments to confront the alarming crisis of violence impacting 1 in 2 children worldwide

LONDON, Sept. 17, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) — Survivors, experts and advocates from around the world are launching a global effort to tackle the shocking issue of violence against children.

They have today [17 September] released an open letter demanding urgent action from world leaders ahead of the first-ever Global Ministerial Conference on Ending Violence Against Children, taking place in Colombia this November.

Public figures including actors, creators and authors Calle & Poché, Forest Whitaker, Gillian Anderson, Shudu Musida and Will Poulter have added their names to the letter, which has been coordinated by Project Everyone and is backed by the World Health Organisation and UNICEF.

According to World Health Organization figures, one in two of all children globally – over 1 billion – experience violence each year, from sexual abuse and gang violence to child marriage and child labour.

A number of survivors of childhood violence have joined the high-profile advocates, alongside leading experts like trauma specialist Bessel van der Kolk, child rights activists Hina Jilani and Princess Mabel van Oranje, and Nobel Peace Prize winner Dr Denis Mukwege.

By raising awareness, the letter seeks to inspire urgent action and drive change at both local and global levels. The group is calling on world leaders to use the upcoming Ministerial Conference to focus on critical strategies and to ensure response and support services are universally accessible to every child in need.

The powerful open letter calls on world leaders to attend the Colombia conference and commit concrete, innovative pledges that match the scale and severity of the crisis.

Evidence shows that with the right approaches, violence against children can be significantly reduced. Countries implementing evidence-based strategies can see reductions by up to 50%.

Gaza: Five people, including a child, killed by Israeli bombing


Five Palestinians, including a child, were killed onTuesday morning in the bombing of the Israeli occupation warplanes in the center and south of the Gaza Strip.

Medical sources reported that four citizens, including a child, were killed as a result of the occupation bombing several homes belonging to the families of Al-Tarturi, Abu Shawqa, and Al-Batran, in Al-Bureij camp, while dozens are still trapped under the rubble.

The same sources added that a person was killed as a result of the occupation bombing a bicycle in the Qizan Rashwan area in the city of Khan Yunis, south of the Strip.

Meanwhile, the occupation forces continue to shell and fire east of the town of Jabalia, north of the Gaza Strip.

The occupation artillery shelling also targeted the neighborhoods of Tal Al-Hawa and Al-Sabra, south of Gaza City.

Local health authorities confirmed that the Palestinian death toll from the Israeli onslaught since October 7 has risen to 41,226 reported fatalities, with an additional 95,413 individuals susta
ining injuries. The majority of the victims are women and children.

According to the same sources, emergency services are still unable to reach many casualties and dead bodies trapped under the rubble or scattered on roads across the war-torn enclave, as Israeli occupation forces continue to obstruct the movement of ambulance and civil defense crews.

Bahrain condemns assassination attempt on former US President

Manama, The Kingdom of Bahrain strongly condemned the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump, Republican presidential candidate.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the ministry expressed solidarity with the United States, its people, the former president and his family in the face of political violence. It also reaffirmed its rejection of all that threatens its security, stability, and democratic process.

A child was injured by the occupation forces’ bullets in Qalqilya

Qalqilya – Ma’an – A child was shot by Israeli occupation forces on Tuesday evening at a military checkpoint southeast of Qalqilya.

Local sources said that the occupation forces fired live bullets at a 16-year-old child while he was near a military checkpoint southeast of Qalqilya, which resulted in his leg being injured. He was taken to the hospital, where his injury was described as moderate.

In a related context, the occupation forces set up “flying” military checkpoints in Qalqilya Governorate.

Eyewitnesses reported that the occupation forces set up a military checkpoint at the entrance to the village of Nabi Elias, east of Qalqilya, and at the entrance to the town of Habla, south of Qalqilya, and detained citizens’ vehicles and checked the IDs of their passengers.

Funeral of the martyr Samir Amar in Tulkarm

Tulkarm – Ma’an – The masses of our people in Tulkarm Governorate bid farewell to the body of the martyr Samir Abdel Rahim Amar (55 years old) on Tuesday evening, in the Shuweika suburb north of the city.

The funeral procession set off from the Martyr Thabet Thabet Governmental Hospital, amidst chants of Takbeer and angry national slogans denouncing the crimes of the occupation and demanding that it be held accountable for its ongoing massacres against our Palestinian people in the West Bank and Gaza.

The martyr’s body was transported by ambulance to his home in the Dhahra area in the suburb, for his family to say their last farewells to him. Then they took him to the old Shuwaika Mosque to pray over him, before burying him in the Al-Fuqaha Cemetery.

The martyr Amar died this afternoon as a result of his critical injury from the occupation forces’ bullets to the chest near the racist separation and expansion wall west of the village of Al-Jaroushiya, adjacent to the Shuweika suburb. He was transferred by a
Red Crescent ambulance to the hospital, which announced his death.

Telecommunications Minister participates in Digital Skills Forum to promote sustainable digital development

Bahrain’s Sixth National Telecommunications Plan (2023-2026) won the United Nations’ 2024 World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prize, recognising its initiatives to drive innovation in the telecommunications and IT sectors, develop digital skills, and align with Bahrain’s Vision 2030 and the 2023-2026 ICT strategic plan.

Martyrdom of a citizen from Shuwaika suburb, north of Tulkarm

Tulkarm – Ma’an – Samir Abdul Rahim Amar, 55, was martyred after being critically injured by Israeli occupation forces’ bullets.

The Ministry of Health and the Palestinian Red Crescent Society reported that Aamer, from the Shuweika suburb north of Tulkarm, was killed after being shot in the chest near the racist separation and expansion wall west of the village of Al-Jaroushiya, adjacent to the Shuweika suburb. He was transferred to the Martyr Thabet Thabet Governmental Hospital in the city.

With the martyrdom of Amer, the number of martyrs in Tulkarm Governorate since the Israeli aggression on the Gaza Strip on October 7, 2023 has risen to 161 martyrs.
