Abu Suleiman says consensus over plan to combat illegal foreign labor facilitates its implementation
Minister of Labor, Kamil Abu Sleiman, said Thursday that the implementation of his recently launched illegal foreign labor control plan will be faster if all the political forces agree on it.
“Consensus over the plan facilitates its execution,” he affirmed, adding, “I am not saying that we can alter the status quo overnight, but we must start implementing the law.”
“We cannot underestimate the difficulty of implementing the plan, but we have studied the issue in a scientific and practical way,” Abu Sleiman maintained, expressing his openness to any ideas or suggestions in this respect.
The Labor Minister’s words came in an interview with “Voice of Lebanon 100.5” Radio Station earlier today.
He disclosed that after assessing the situation of foreign laborers in Lebanon, specifically of Syrian nationality, it was surprisingly found that only 1700 Syrian workers are registered and hold work permits from the Ministry, at a time when hundreds of thousands of workers are operating in the country with no proper registration.
On the Syrian displacement dossier, Abu Sleiman pointed to “a national and sovereign side that concerns all Lebanese, since everyone today is aware of the need to end displacement and ensure the refugees’ return to Syria.” He added, “There is a security side that is being followed up by the General Security, and there is a legal side regarding their work, whereby employers ought to abide by the law.”
“It is not about stopping foreign laborers from working, but about employers securing work permits for Syrian laborers,” clarified Abu Sleiman. He encouraged herein employers to settle the situation of their workers in line with the regulations and to benefit from the one-month grace period, which starts on June 10, before an increase in fines is implemented.
Moreover, Abu Sleiman pointed out that “if the Syrian workers are serving in sectors confined to the Lebanese, then employers have to seek the services of Lebanese citizens instead, which will contribute to activating the country’s economy.”
