Abul Gheit denounces assassination attempt against Iraq PM

Arab League Secretary General Ahmed Abul Gheit strongly condemned on Sunday the heinous assassination attempt targeting Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi, saying the drone attack that targeted the residence of the premier was meant to undermine the Iraqi State and jeopardize its security and stability.

Tensions that have been running high in Iraq over the past period following the results of parliamentary elections and today’s attack against Kadhimi underlines the importance that the Iraqi State would decisively address the uncontrolled spread of weapons and face outlawed groups, a source at the Arab League general secretariat said.

He expressed confidence in the ability of Iraqi security bodies to protect State institutions and stand against any attempt to threaten the country’s stability and security.

The source reiterated the pan-Arab body’s continued support of Iraq at this critical stage, wishing all prosperity, security and stability to the country.

A drone laden with explosives targeted the residence of the Iraqi prime minister in Baghdad earlier in the day.

The attack came after protests in the Iraqi capital over the result of a general election last month turned violent.
