Chinese Ambassador to Lebanon, Wang Kejian, held a press conference at his residence in Ramlet al-Bayda, where he spoke of the “Silk Road International Cooperation Summit” and said “This idea of establishing an economic belt for a Silk Road for the 21st Century was launched in 2013 by the Chinese ambassador with the aim to develop the infrastructure of the Eurasian continent, to coordinate policies among countries located on this belt, and to deepen cooperation so as to achieve prosperity.”

“Four years later, this initiative has developed into a comprehensive, operational plan and into initiatives and agreements between China and other countries. The geographical framework has focused on the Asian continent from China in the far east to Europe in the far west,” he said, stressing that “the development of this initiative aimed to open an economic line between China and Europe through Russia, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and East Africa,” he said.

“China is open to all countries, and welcomes any of them to join this initiative. After more than three years of preparation, consultation and joint action with the countries of the region, this initiative has achieved preliminary results. A summit was held for this purpose with the participation of 111 countries (…) Lebanon being one of them; a country which showed positive efforts in this regard.”

“Agreements were signed with many countries, and coordination is ongoing at the political, financial and economic levels. Participants have agreed to build a belt of the Silk Road for peace, prosperity and openness,” he said.

“Lebanon enjoys a diversified culture and civilization, as well as a thriving tourism, a strong banking sector and other booming sectors, as culture, arts and media,” the ambassador said, stressing that “this country is very unique in the Middle East and the relations between China and Lebanon are excellent. Trade exchange is progressing rapidly and China is Lebanon’s biggest partner at this level.”

“Discussions have been made with the Lebanese government over economic cooperation and means to develop the Tripoli port, among other developmental projects. The Chinese government has provided its Lebanese counterpart stationery and security screening equipment that have played a major role in the fight against terrorism. It has also assisted Lebanon in the issue of displaced Syrians,” he concluded.
