Ambassador of Norway from Baalbek: To form government in line with aspirations of citizens
Norway’s ambassador to Lebanon, Leni Stenseth, visited Baalbek this Thursday and held a tour in the region, during which she said “I will promote Lebanon in my country, and urge my people especially to visit the city of Baalbek and its archaeological sites. Many Norwegians love to come to this area, especially because it is safe. (…) Encouraging and activating tourism promotes employment opportunities.”
The ambassador went on to say: “We encourage the speedy formation of a government that is in line with the aspirations of the citizens. The popular movement in the streets is an internal Lebanese matter, and it is important not to use violence on both ends. Due to the poor economic conditions, there must be a speedy government formation, and this is what I mentioned during my meetings with Lebanese officials.”
“Norway is helping 50 countries in the world, and Lebanon is the fifth in terms of aid volume, which amounts to $ 40 million a year,” she added. “We are helping displaced Syrians, and Lebanon’s share is double that provided to other host countries. (…) We found that the displaced Syrians form a burden on the Lebanese society, and that is why we are helping the Lebanese people, supporting the World Bank to finance projects that will create jobs for the Lebanese, and supporting the Lebanese government for oil extraction. Norway is an oil producer and we have expertise in this field.”
“We are trying to find political solutions in Syria, which would allow for the return of displaced Syrians to their country, thus reducing the burden weighing on Lebanon,” Stenseth concluded.
