Aoun asks Kardel for UN assistance in southern border demarcation

President Michel Aoun on Wednesday called the United Nations to provide assistance to Lebanon to resume the demarcation process of the country’s southern land and maritime borders, stressing that the occupied Shebaa farms and Kfarshouba heights are part of Lebanon and that their residents are Lebanese citizens.

Aoun’s remarks came during his meeting at Baabda palace with the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon, Pernille Dahler Kardel, before her departure to the US. In New York, Kardel will submit to UN Chief Antonio Guterres a report on the situation in Lebanon and the implementation of UN Security Council’s resolution 1701.

The President reiterated to his guest Lebanon’s demand to renew the UNIFIL mandate, without making any change to the peacekeepers’ number, mission or budget, stressing on the continuous Israeli violations of the Lebanese land, sea and air sovereignty, and thus the international resolutions.

Turning to the economic situation, Aoun explained to Kardel the guidelines of Lebanon’s national economy plan, maintaining that it respects the recommendations of CEDRE conference.

Moreover, he renewed calls upon his guest to help facilitate the return of Syrian refugees to the safe areas in Syria.

For her part, Kardel renewed the UN support for Lebanon and readiness to help the country on various levels.
