Aoun meets Kubis over UNIFIL mandate extension issue

President of the Republic, Michel Aoun, on Monday reiterated Lebanon’s keenness on the continuation of the international forces operating in the South, UNIFIL, in carrying out its mission in implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701.

President Aoun hoped that “the Security Council will respond to Lebanon’s request to extend the mandate of UNIFIL without any change in its mission or reduction in its budget, so that it can continue to play its role in cooperation the Lebanese army .

Aoun’s words came during his meeting this morning with the UN Special Coordinator, Jan Kubis, who visited Baabda Palace before heading to New York for a session of the Security Council on July 22 on UN Resolution #1701.

The Head of State wondered about the reasons that prevent the international community from supporting Lebanon’s demand for the return of the displaced Syrians to the safe areas in Syria, especially that incoming reports from the international organizations and humanitarian bodies indicate an improvement in the security situation in most areas of Syria.

Aoun also pointed out in front of Kubis that “the process of the safe return of displaced Syrians from Lebanon to Syria is ongoing,” noting that the number of displaced persons who have returned to their homeland so far has reached around 313,000, with no cases of troublesome being reported.

On the other hand, President Aoun met with “Strong Lebanon” bloc MP Mustafa Hussein, with whom he discussed the needs of Akkar region, in addition to affairs relevant to the Alawite community.

Aoun later met with a delegation of the Bar Associations of Beirut and Tripoli, with whom he discussed the new system regulating lawyers’ membership.
