President Michel Aoun expressed his appreciation for the humanitarian role played by the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, especially in the Arab countries which are witnessing bloody conflicts, pointing out “the need to work to stop these conflicts through peaceful political solutions.”

President Aoun’s statement came during a meeting at the Baabda Palace with President of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, Francesco Rocca, who thanked Aoun for “the support to the Red Cross and Red Crescent in Lebanon.”

He said that, after his election, “his first visit was to Syria, where he was briefed on the situation on the ground and the extent of the suffering and pain that the Syrians are experiencing as a result of the war in their country.”

Rocca expressed appreciation for “the care granted to the Syrian refugees in Lebanon, which has become an example when talking about the treatment of displaced persons in the countries where they have taken refuge.”

“The Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies have the potential to help Lebanon cope with the burden of displaced people,” he said.

President Aoun, in turn, listed “the repercussions of the presence of Syrian refugees in Lebanon and their spread across all Lebanese regions,” calling for “their gradual return to safe areas in Syria and the distribution of international aid to them in their cities and villages, especially those that are undergoing reconciliation under the auspices of the Syrian state.”

“Lebanon is the smallest country with the largest percentage of displaced people and refugees and should be given priority when the Syrians return to their country,” the president said.

On a different note, President Aoun tackled with the Governor of the Central Bank, Riad Salameh, the monetary and financial conditions in the country and the procedures adopted by the BDL at this level.

“The monetary situation in the country is stable,” Salameh said.

He discussed with President Aoun “the aspirations for the year 2018, and the means of financing to activate the economy.”

He pointed out that “the measures taken by the bank help maintain financial stability in the country.”
