Aoun to Billingslea: Lebanon efficiently contributing to fighting terrorism financing and money laundering
President Michel Aoun on Wednesday maintained that Lebanon was efficiently contributing to the international efforts exerted to fight the financing of terrorism and money laundering, stressing that the Lebanese enforced laws do punish perpetrators of similar crimes.
“Lebanon has also formed a national coordination committee to fight the financing of terrorism, in addition to a similar one particular to fighting money laundering,” Aoun said.
“Lebanon is undertaking all the required legislative procedures to keep pace with the international law relevant to fighting terrorism, especially after the achievement our army had scored eradicating the terrorist organizations from the eastern territories,” he added.
“The fight against terrorism is not finished and it requires the cooperation of the international community,” he underlined.
The President made these remarks during his meeting at Baabda palace today with the Assistant Secretary for Terrorist Financing in the US Department of Treasury, Marshall Billingslea, accompanied by US Ambassador to Lebanon, Elizabeth Richard; Caretaker Justice Minister, Salim Jreissati, attended the talks.
During the meeting, Aoun thanked the US for the assistance it is providing to the Lebanese military, highlighting the necessity of international efforts to help Lebanon deal with the burden caused by the Syrian refugees.
For his part, Billingsea underscored the US keenness on cooperating with the Lebanese financial and banking institutions to fight terrorism financing and money laundering.
He also hoped that the new government would be capable of withstanding the current financial and economic challenges in Lebanon.
It is to note that Jreissati had submitted to the US official a report summarizing Lebanon’s top achievements in the field of fighting terrorism and money laundering since the beginning of President Aoun’s tenure.
