AOUN WELCOMES KUBIS, AMERICAN TASK FORCE: WE ARE TAKING UNPRECEDENTED ECONOMIC, ANTI-CORRUPTION MEASURES
President of the Republic, Michel Aoun, on Monday received UN Secretary General’s Representative in Beirut, Jan Kubis.
The outcome of the President’s participation in the UN General Assembly in New York last week featured high between the pair.
Kubis noted the broad international support for the establishment of the Human Academy for Encounter and Dialogue, and the speech that had been delivered by the President of the Republic at the United Nations, particularly when touching on the Syrian refugee crisis.
Separately, the President discussed the general situation, regional, and international developments, as well as Lebanon’s position on them with a delegation of the American Task Force for Lebanon, which also discussed with the President the best means to strengthen Lebanese-American relations on all levels.
President Aoun responded to questions from members of the delegation, stressing that “Israel is always attacking Lebanon by land, sea, and air.
Lebanon strives to respect resolution 1701, but in return, it will respond to any aggression against it because it reserves the right to self-defense, a right that cannot be waived, the President said.
Expressing Lebanon’s gratitude for the support provided by the United States to the Lebanese army, Aoun voiced his aspiration for more support in terms of finding solutions to the issue of Syrian and Palestinian refugees.
The President concluded by stressing that Lebanon was carrying out many unprecedented economic measures, starting with the adoption of austerity budgets for the current and next years, imposing import taxes, combating corruption, and launching reform in various sectors.
Moreover,President Aoun wished the delegation a good stay in the country, stressing that “Lebanon views the United States as a friend and is therefore looking forward to its further support on various levels.”
President Aoun then received Chairman of the Economy, Trade and Planning Parliamentary Committee, MP Nehme Efram, who briefed him on the work of the committee and the five-year plan it had prepared to approach the economic and financial situation in the country.
MP Efram said he had discussed with the President a number of pressing issues, stressing “the importance of providing USD for productive sectors.”
