French Foreign Minister, Jean-Marc Ayrault, met on Thursday with House Speaker, Nabih Berri, in Ain El-Tineh, prior to concluding his official visit to Lebanon.

The pair tackled most recent developments on the local and regional arenas.

“We discussed the role assumed by Berri as head of parliament at the level of constitutional institutions in Lebanon and the national dialogue,” the French diplomat said in the wake of the meeting.

“I conveyed to him the support and appreciation of France because Lebanon has overcome its difficulties through the election of a President and the formation of a cabinet,” he added.

He said that Lebanon was on track, pointing out that their talks also touched on the challenges faced by officials in this country.

Ayrault relayed that Speaker of Parliament reiterated Lebanon’s commitment to dissociate itself from the crisis in the region notably in Syria, as well as the importance of equipping the Lebanese Army.

“I confirmed to Berri that France is committed to present 15 million Euros pledged by our president. In this context, we discussed the relations with Saudi Arabia and the planned visit to the Kingdom by President Aoun which I find very positive,” he concluded.

Separately, Berri received UNIFIL Commander Major General Michael Beary.
