Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Minister Gebran Bassil launched on Wednesday the “national campaign to restore citizenship” in a ceremony held at the Ministry.

Bassil word on the occasion began with a highlight of the importance of this project as it puts into action a comprehensive national plan to give back citizenship to every person of Lebanese origin.

“This event came after several steps carried out by several ministries, including the interior and justice ministries,” he explained, noting that it is a practical first step and a translation of a national will.

“Today we are giving back citizenship while our identity is threatened,” he said. “We do not want the naturalization of Syrians and Palestinian but that of our sons abroad.”

“It is a common interest for all our communities and parties. It is not allowed to ‘sectarianize’ this step,” Bassil said.

“Every person of Lebanese origin must obtain Lebanese citizenship, regardless of his community, and every non-Lebanese is forbidden from having the Lebanese nationality.”

For his part, Interior Minister Nuhad Mashnouq said “It’s a first step in a long path to restore citizenship for Lebanese, thanks to the efforts of Minister Bassil and his political camp.”
