Bassil in Marrakech: For safe, dignified return of displaced Syrians to their homeland
Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs and Emigrants, Gebran Bassil, on Monday underlined that the only solution for the mass exodus lies in the safe, dignified and sustainable return of displaced Syrians to their homeland.
Minister Bassil’s words on Monday came in his speech delivered at the Marrakech Conference on the “Universal Declaration of Safe, Organized and Legal Migration.”
Bassil said: “Migration, if properly managed, leads to cultural diversity and stands as a source of wealth and peace for our countries.”
However, the Minister added, if migration is mismanaged and left unchecked and without restraints, it would lead to a civilization chaos and would be a source of conflict and fighting for our peoples.
As such, Bassil highlighted the need to distinguish between the categories of emigrants, refugees and the displaced persons, and between legal migrants and illegal infiltrators. Bassil shed light on the difference between human rights and the sovereignty of the State and the interest of its peoples.
“Migration is an option while asylum is compulsory,” said Minister Bassil, adding that Lebanon has the highest rate of asylum and displacement in human history, reaching 200 per square kilometer.
The Minister stressed that there should be a distinction between the agreement on organized migration and the agreement on refugees, given the different nature of both agreements and their legal frameworks.
Bassil underscored that the only solution to the mass exodus is the safe, dignified and sustainable return of displaced Syrians to their homeland.
Minister Bassil said Lebanon is proud of its expatriates who have significantly contributed to their host countries, saying “Yes for safe, orderly and legal migration, and absolutely no for fake asylum and masked displacement,” he concluded.
On the other hand, Bassil held a meeting with Vatican Secretary Cardinal Pietro Barrolin.
Bassil also met with the Turkish Interior Minister who heads the Turkish delegation to the Conference. The two sides discussed issues of mutual concern, especially the issue of the displaced Syrians.
