We favour the establishment of an international anti-terror operations’ room, House Speaker Nabih Berri stated upon his inauguration of the 23rd Congress of Arab parliamentarians in the Egyptian capital Cairo today.

Having thanked Egyptian leaders for their hospitality, Speaker Berri opted for a peaceful dialogue between the Arabs and the Iranians in pursuit of what he termed as: “defusing existing rife regional tensions.” In Berri’s words, real change could never be implemented through the use of or, deployment of force. Citing the Iranian – US case to make his point, the Speaker staked high hopes on a positive outcome to ongoing talks between the Russians and the Europeans in pursuit of a peaceful resolution of the Syrian crisis.

Berri urged Arabs states to unite in the face of the rising threat of terrorism knocking at our doors. He drew attention to the plight of Syrians and Palestinians displaced into Lebanon urging Arab brothers to extend a helping hand to the best of their ability; He also reiterated the importance of “army, people, Hezbollah triad” in the face of daily Israeli violations of Lebanese airspace and territorial waters urging sustained Arab assistance to refugees and Palestinians living under occupation; Proposing the establishment of ad-hoc committees in support of the Palestinians, a common Arab market and a human rights commission designed to prod Arab regimes to honour and respect basic universal human rights. Berri lastly paid tribute to the late Boutros Ghali, Muhammad Haykal and Abdul-Rahman Abnoudi.
