House Speaker Nabih Berri on Thursday welcomed at his Ain Tineh residence President of the Republic of Ireland, Michael Higgins, and his accompanying delegation.

The meeting took place in the presence of Minister Ghassan Atallah and Ambassador Rami Murtada.

Discussions reportedly touched on the bilateral relations between Lebanon and Ireland and the current regional situation.

Speaker Berri thanked Ireland for its permanent support to Lebanon, most notably its participation within UNIFIL forces in south Lebanon for more than 40 years.

Berri hoped that President Higgins’ visit will contribute to further strengthening relations between the two countries in the various fields, especially parliamentary cooperation.

The House Speaker renewed Lebanon’s commitment to UN Resolution 1701, noting that UNIFIL’s peacekeepers are witnesses to Israel’s aggression and its daily violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty by land, sea and air.

Berri also thanked the Irish President for its assistance in the Syrian refugee issue.

On the other hand, Berri met with National Education Minister Wael Chehayeb, with talks reportedly touching on the general situation and issues related to the Ministry.

Berri also met with a delegation from the Lebanese Red Cross Society, headed by Dr. Antoine Zoghbi, who handed him an invitation to sponsor its celebration on the occasion of its 75th Jubilee and the International Day of Volunteering in Saida on December 5.
