CHOUCAIR DURING MEETING OF ECONOMIC BODIES WITH PRESIDENT OF FRENCH SOCIOECONOMIC COUNCIL: COUNCIL OF MINISTERS WILL STUDY MACKENZIE PLAN SOON
The Lebanese Economic Bodies on Monday held a work meeting presided over by Telecoms Minister, Mohammad Choucair, with President of the French Economic and Social Council, Patrick Bernasconi, in the presence and participation of President of Lebanon’s Socioeconomic Council, Charles Arbid.
The meeting discussed the best means of developing relations between the private sectors of both countries, as well as cooperation between various civil society organizations to devise solutions and ideas that will promote economic and social development.
Choucair touched on the economic, financial and social crisis facing Lebanon and the great challenges posed by the Syrian refugee crisis.
He also spoke of the efforts exerted by the government to approve and implement all reform measures, which responded to the demands of the international community, which supported Lebanon at the CEDRE Conference.
These reforms pave the way for the implementation of the investment program approved at CEDRE Conference for the redevelopment of Lebanese infrastructure, where Lebanon was able to obtain commitments of $ 11.7 billion and to implement projects worth $ 3.8 billion in partnership between the private and the public sectors, Choucair said. He also counted on partnering with French companies to actively participate in this process.
The Council of Ministers will soon begin to study the Mackenzie plan, which we rely on a lot to re-stimulate the productive sectors and move the economic wheel, the Telecoms Minister added.
He went on to stress the importance of Lebanon’s geographical location and its economic system, which qualifies it to be a “regional platform for Western companies wishing to work in the region, especially to participate in the reconstruction of Syria, Iraq and Yemen.”
In turn, Arbid said, The meeting could give us fruitful ideas to activate the private sector and to strengthen its ties with the French private sector.”
He stressed that the Lebanese Council has been working hard, but in cooperation with France and the French Council, we hope for great success.”
For his part, Bernasconi explained that the difference between the French and the Lebanese Councils was that the composition of the French Council had witnessed a lot of development since its establishment.
Today, there are 80 bodies, and out of 13 committees, there are eight committees chaired by women. This leads to consensus and finding solutions in various fields, Bernasconi explained.
He added that France was preparing for an important development in the exercise of democracy, so as to strike a balance between participatory democracy and representative democracy.
Bernasconi finally praised the signature of a protocol of cooperation with the Lebanese Council, and said: “This step will increase cooperation between the two chambers and enable the Lebanese Council to benefit from the French expertise, all for the benefit of Lebanon’s economic and social evolvement.
