DAESH LAUNCHES VIOLENT COUNTER-OFFENSIVE IN EASTERN SYRIA, KILLING 70 U.S.-BACKED FIGHTERS
DAMASCUS, At least 70 fighters with the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), have been killed, and 100 others wounded over the past 24 hours, as a result of a counter-offensive by the extremist Daesh group in eastern Syria, a war monitor reported, Saturday.
The counter-offensive against the SDF started on Friday and continued Saturday, during which, the terror-designated group recaptured areas it had lost to the SDF during an ongoing military showdown, in the last Daesh-held pocket in the eastern countryside of Deir al-Zour in eastern Syria.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said, war planes of the U.S.-led coalition, which is backing the SDF in its push to defeat the Daesh, on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River, could not support the SDF in confronting the Daesh attack, due to the bad weather conditions.
The Britain-based watchdog group said, around 4,000 militants are located in a few towns in Deir al-Zour.
The Daesh counter-attack targeted areas the SDF have recently captured in the towns of Souseh and Baghous, both located in the last Daesh-held pocket on the eastern bank of the Euphrates River.
The Daesh started its offensive by sending suicide car bombs to target SDF positions, taking advantage also of the bad weather.
It was the most violent attack by the Daesh against the SDF, since the beginning of 2017, said the observatory, adding that, dozens of the SDF fighters had gone missing during the attack.
