Egypt condemns assassination attempt targeting Iraq PM

Egypt strongly condemned on Sunday the failed assassination attempt targeting Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kadhimi.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry reiterated Egypt’s unwavering support of brotherly Iraq against whatever is jeopardizing the country’s stability and security or undermining its internal unity.

Such desperate terrorist attacks will not dissuade Iraq from going ahead with its national accomplishments, the latest of which was the parliamentary elections that were held last month, the ministry said.

It called on all Iraqi parties to exercise self-restraint and place national interest above any other consideration to preserve the security and stability of Iraq.

A drone laden with explosives targeted the residence of the Iraqi prime minister in Baghdad earlier in the day.

The attack came after protests in the Iraqi capital over the result of a general election last month turned violent.
