Falconers in Rafha Gear Up for Hunting Season

As fall approaches and temperatures get cooler, falconers in Rafha Governorate, Northern Borders region, are preparing their birds for the upcoming hunting season.

“Miqyad”, the seven-month off-season period during which falcons receive specialized care and relaxed, has ended.

Falah Al-Shammari, a falconer in Rafha, told a Saudi Press Agency reporter that September and early October are crucial months for preparing falcons for the hunting season. During this time, falconers focus on restoring the birds’ natural instincts and strengthening their bond with their human companions.

Muteb Al-Noman, another falconer, described the meticulous preparation process, which includes trimming the bird’s beak and claws, as well as fitting it with a tracking device to ensure its safety.

The National Center for Wildlife has officially announced September 1 as the start of this year’s hunting season in Saudi Arabia.
