Fighting renews in Khartoum, army washes hands for responsibility of deadlock

The Sudanese capital witnessed on Friday a new round of fighting pitting army troops against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces.

Witnesses told KUNA that the renewed clashes raged east and west of Kahrtoum and southern Um Durman.

Meanwhile, the army said in a statement the military command had forwarded “suggestions to the mediators of the Jeddah platform,” adding that the military commanders were surprised that “the response came by suspending the negotiations before sending the replies.” Language of the new statement by the military contradicted a previous declaration about unilateral withdrawal from the Jeddah negotiating table.

Meanwhile, the Rapid Support Forces renewed in a statement adherence to the Saudi-US initiative for sake of reaching a viable settlement, accusing the army of jeopardizing the talks by presenting “impossible terms.” Sudan, since April 15, has been witnessing fighting between the two foes after the two sides failed to reach concord on merging the irregular forces in the army. The fruitless talks had coincided with efforts to shift powers from the military to civilian rulers.
