Future bloc says Bassil must apologize for ‘offending’ Lebanon
Future lawmakers on Tuesday underlined that Foreign Minister, Gebran Bassil, must apologize for what they termed as “practices offending Lebanon,” mainly in reference to his absence all along the fresh visit of UN Chief, Ban Ki-moon.
“The bloc believes that the least that Bassil should do is to cease his practices that are offending Lebanon, as well as to apologize and renege on his mistakes,” the bloc said in a statement issued following its weekly meeting at Bayt-al-Wassat, under the chairmanship of MP Fouad Siniora.
“The bloc, alongside substantial categories of the Lebanese people, deprecates that disgraceful conduct of Foreign Minister, Gebran Bassil, vis-A-vis the Secretary General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, and his accompanying delegation (…) at a time when they came to confirm support for Lebanon, and its sovereignty and independence,” the statement read.
Conferees mainly condemned Bassil for what they saw as accusations leveled against Ban, of having visited Lebanon only to promote for the settlement of more than one million Syrian refugees, who fled into the Lebanese soil the now five-year-old war at home.
“This is not true and [Ban] did not discuss this issue at all with any Lebanese official,” they explained.
“This is all sheer imagination and incitement by Bassil, who is seemingly pushed to do so by Hezbollah,” they reckoned.
“This is what dealt Lebanon a new moral blow, after Bassil caused severance to ties with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the states of the Gulf Cooperation Council, as well as other Arab countries. This destructive process undertaken by the Foreign Minister, still persists, through the fabrication of a problem that does not actually exist,” they continued, raising doubts on the real reason behind Bassil’s practices.
They even said that the Foreign Minister was trying to veer the attention of the real problem, that is, according to them, the presidential vacuum.
Within this frame, Future Deputies renewed calls upon all the parliamentary blocs to head to the Parliament to elect a new head of the Lebanese state.
“The political forces hindering the election of a president are perpetrating a huge crime against Lebanon,” they warned.
