In a press release by the United Nations Information Centre on Thursday, it said: “UN Special Envoy of the Secretary-General on Disability and Accessibility Lenin Boltaire Moreno Garces visited today the Bekaa area in eastern Lebanon. In Taanayel, he toured a center of the Ministry of Social Affairs for people with disabilities and in Zahleh he met with UN and local officials as well as Syrian refugees with disability. He also met with local authorities and visited the Lebanese Physical Handicap Union in Baalbek, which caters for both the needs of Lebanese and non-Lebanese persons with disabilities.”

Release added: “At a press conference inside the Baalbek Temple, Moreno Garces called on Lebanese partners to work together for the full inclusion of persons with disabilities, to meet their needs, and ensure their active participation in the public life in Lebanon. The Special Envoy stressed the importance of Lebanon ratifying the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which it had already signed. He said the UN was ready to lend support to Lebanon in the implementation of laws and mechanisms in that regard.”

“It is essential that the services and the protection of rights cover all those in need, independent of their nationality, religion and legal status. It is a question of humanism, but even more important, it is a question of human rights,” the Special envoy added.

Moreno Garces will attend tomorrow the signing ceremony of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Lebanese Physical Handicap Union (LPHU) and Civic Influence Hub (CIH), which will be held under his auspices, at 10:00 AM, in the Crown Plaza Hotel, Hamra.
