Hariri from Moscow: Putin wants a political solution in Syria
Former Prime Minister Saad Hariri received this afternoon at his place of residence in Moscow the Lebanese Ambassador to Russia Shaouki Bou Nassar and discussed with him the situation of the embassy and the Lebanese residing in Russia.
Ambassador Bou Nassar had received Hariri upon his arrival yesterday evening to Moscow.
Interview with the “Future TV”
Premier Minister Hariri responded to the questions of the “Future TV” about his meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov:
Question: How was the meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov?
Hariri: It was a very good meeting and we spoked frankly. There is no doubt that the Russians are very interested in Lebanon. We are trying by all means to protect Lebanon from any disaster, and for me the most important thing is to elect a President, which will solve the main source of most problems in the country, in terms of the weakening of the institutions or the economic and security situation. Therefore, we see that the fundamental solution is to elect a President.
We also discussed a number of topics related to the region and how the situation is progressing in Syria. We all hope a political solution will be achieved as soon as possible, and our position is clear concerning Bashar al-Assad, and so is the Russian position. It was a good visit and hopefully we will have other meetings.
Question: What is Russia’s position toward Syria?
Hariri: It is clear that Russian President Vladimir Putin wants a political solution in Syria. The others might not consider this essential, whether Bashar Assad or the opposition. But I believe that a political solution is on its way for Syria and this matters to the Syrian people.
Question: Some people said that your visit to Russia is to activate the Lebanese presidency and to ask the Russians to play a bigger role in this area
Hariri: They have a big role in the region, and we hope that their role would be activated in Lebanon. We are talking to the Russians from this viewpoint.
Letter to Sharif
Separately, Hariri sent a message to the Pakistani Prime Minister Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, in which he condemned the terrorist attack in the city of Lahore last Sunday and offered condolences for the victims who fell.
