Interior Minister attends launch of Healthy Cities project in Capital Governorate

General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa attended the launch of the Healthy City Project in the Capital Governorate on Monday.

Health Minister Dr Jaleela bint AlSayed Jawad Hassan and Chief of Public Security Lt-General Tariq Al Hassan attended.

The Interior Minister commended the initiatives launched by the Capital Governorate as part of its role and responsibility to deliver projects through cooperation and coordination with partner organisations, which enhances interaction with citizens to meet their requirements.

He highlighted that implementing the Healthy City project in all areas of the Governorate would contribute to achieving sustainable development.

The minister said that the capital Manama is an international renowned city which continuously worked on the sustainability of its development programmes, including tourism and social sectors and using smart technology to ensure the safety and comfort of people.

On his part, Capital Governor Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulrahman Al Khalifa said that the project is a milestone in the journey of the Governorate and Health Ministry for its environmental protection efforts and reinforcement of public health.

He highlighted that the successes of the Governorate since the launch of the healthy cities programme in 2017 included the announcement of Um Al Hassam as a healthy city in 2018, followed by Manama in 2021 as the first healthy capital in the Middle East region. He said that the achievements motivated the Governorate to expand the project in the whole governorate. He thanked HE Interior Minister for his support and guidance.

Dr. Tasnim Atatra, Representative and Head of the World Health Organisation (WHO)’s Office in Bahrain, said Healthy Cities is one of the key initiatives led by WHO in the Eastern Mediterranean region.

She noted that Manama was the first capital city to be named Healthy City in the region.
