Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Shamkhani has defended his country’s decision to allow Russian jets to bomb targets in Syria from Iran.

“Tehran-Moscow cooperation in the fight against terrorism in Syria is strategic and we exchange capacities and potentialities in this field,” Shamkhani told the Islamic Republic News Agency(IRNA).

Yesterday, Russian long-range Tupolev-22M3 bombers and Sukhoi Su-34 fighter-bombers used the Hamedan air base in Iran to launch airstrikes against the Syrian opposition in the cities of Aleppo, Deir Ez-Zor and Idlib.

This is the first time that Russia uses an Iranian military base to bomb sites in Syria.
