IRAQ LAUNCHES AIR STRIKES ON SYRIAN INSURGENTS INSIDE SYRIA
BAGHDAD, Iraq, Iraqi Air Force, on Tuesday, carried out air strikes on positions of a Syrian insurgent group, inside Syria, near the Iraqi border, the Iraqi military said.
Iraqi F-16 jets pounded a weapons warehouse in Susah area, in eastern Syria, containing rockets and explosives, with 10 militants affiliated with al-Farouq Brigades, which is an anti-government group, believed to have links with the extremist group Daesh, a statement issued by the Iraqi Joint Operations Command (JOC), said.
Another air strike targeted the headquarters of al-Farouq Brigades, in al-Baghuz area, in eastern Syria, with 30 militants inside, rockets and different kinds of assault rifles, the JOC said.
“According to the intelligence reports, the two targets were completely destroyed,” it said.
The air strikes were ordered by Prime Minister, Adel Abdul Mahdi, who is also the commander-in-chief of the Iraqi forces, based on accurate intelligence reports, the statement added.
The air strikes are part of the continued preemptive air strikes against Daesh militants inside Syria, launched by Iraqi fighter jets.
Late last year, former Iraqi Prime Minister, Haider al-Abadi, officially declared full liberation of Iraq from the Daesh, after Iraqi forces recaptured all the areas once seized by the extremist group.
