Public Health Minister, Jamil Jabak, on Friday held a press conference at the Ministry, where he spoke about the outcome of his recent visit to Geneva to attend the 72nd General Assembly of the World Health Organization.

Minister Jabak held at the sidelines of the WHO General Assembly a series of meetings with Arab and European health ministers and heads of participating delegations.

Jabak said that he highlighted during the General Assembly the impact of the Syrian displacement on the health care system on Lebanon, notably with the presence of more than 1.5 million displaced people on Lebanese soil. Jabak urged the international community to assist Lebanon in shouldering the burden of the Syrian displacement at the health care level.

Jabak clarified that Lebanon has called for increased funding for Syrian refugees in the health care domain, given that WHO and the Office of the High Commissioner for Refugees cover only 75% of their hospitalization costs.

Regarding means of cooperation with Iran in the medicine sector, he said that the international sanctions imposed on Iran prevent the import of medicine from that country.

“That’s why we resorted to the European market,” he said.

In reply to another question, Jabak stressed that the US position on Hezbollah will have no negative impact on the Ministry, which has no specific political affiliation, as he said.

He stressed that the Ministry belongs to the Lebanese State and works for all the Lebanese people.
