Japanese ambassador attends completion ceremony of project for provision of agricultural support
In a press release by the Japanese Embassy in Beirut, it said: “As part of its continuous assistance to Lebanon, the Government of Japan provided $800,000 USD for the project of “Social Stabilization through Comprehensive Agricultural Support for Refugee Host Communities in Lebanon”, implemented by the UNDP. The project was in collaboration with The Ministry of Energy and Water, The International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), The Lebanese Agricultural Research Institute (LARI) and the Municipality of Qab Elias.
On the occasion of the conclusion of the project, on June 27 2019, H.E. Mr. Matahiro Yamaguchi, Ambassador of Japan to Lebanon, attended an inauguration ceremony in Qab Elias. The project aimed to boost the productivity of local farmers and reduce water wastage through the rehabilitation of irrigation canals. The enhanced and organized irrigation system will facilitate the channeling of water to agricultural fields, will enable farmers to effectively manage water, and as a result will increase the quality of the crops. The project also supported the local farmers and the Syrian workers through a capacity building program that helped improve their farming techniques.
During the ceremony, Ambassador Yamaguchi stressed the importance of the project in developing the agricultural sector, which is a major source of employment for thousands of families, especially in the Bekaa region. The Ambassador also affirmed that Japan will continue on supporting developmental projects across the country, to help mitigate the impact of the refugee crisis, and improve the living conditions of the Lebanese communities.”
