Kanaan after Strong Lebanon bloc: We adhere to safe, not voluntary return of displaced
The “Strong Lebanon” parliamentary bloc held its weekly meeting under the chairmanship of bloc Secretary, MP Ibrahim Kanaan, at the Free Patriotic Movement headquarters in Sin El Fil, with talks touching on an array of local issues.
“Lebanon’s openness to the world from the United States to Russia, Europe and the Arab countries is an affirmation of Lebanon’s historic mission. Since its inception, Lebanon has been a point of convergence between different civilizations, especially the East and West. (…) It carried the message of freedom in this region,” Kanaan said in the wake of the meeting.
“With our openness, we mirror our national background and our national unity without which stability will be shaken, as well as the financial and economic interests of Lebanon which we seek to reinforce and remove the doubts surrounding it, by committing to reforms, as we have done in Washington and what is happening in Moscow today. It is commitment neither to a policy, nor to external backgrounds, but rather a Lebanese national background and an official Lebanese position which has been repeatedly expressed by the government, based on strengthening internal immunity and removing Lebanon from negative influences,” he explained.
“We renew our adherence to the united Lebanese vision in the file of the displaced Syrians, notable the safe, not voluntary return. Waiving the sovereignty of Lebanon in this file is not on the table, but committing to humanitarian principles is what we imposed on ourselves before we were even asked to do so,” he asserted.
