LEBANON’S PRESIDENT AOUN CONFIRMS ELECTIONS TO BE HELD ON TIME

This is yet another proof of the importance of the role that Lebanon plays, in its environment and the world,” said President Michel Aoun, hoping, “these conferences would result in practical decisions and measures, that could contribute to empowering Lebanon, strengthening its army and security forces, boosting its economy and helping it face the repercussions of Syrians’ displacement to its territory.”

President Aoun made these remarks during his meeting, at the Baabda Palace, in the presence of French Ambassador, Bruno Foucher, a delegation from the French Senate, headed by Senator and Chairman of the Group of Relations with Christians and Minorities in the Middle East, Bruno Retailleau, who is visiting Lebanon, as part of a tour of several Arab countries.

Retailleau praised the “positions made by President Aoun, since the start of his term.”

He recalled the “positive feedback to Aoun’s state visit to France, end of last Sept,” noting that, “France and the international community appreciate the care provided for the Syrian refugees in Lebanon,” adding that, “this country has handled a lot to help the displaced people,” stressing, “the need for them to return to their country, after the provision of appropriate security climate that preserves their safety.”

The French delegation discussed with the President a number of current issues, including “the situation of Christians in the East, and ways to end the wars in a number of countries of the region.”

President Aoun thanked the delegation for its visit and its interest in “following up on the situation of Christians and minorities in the Middle East.” He also discussed Lebanon’s position on such matters, including “working on the return of displaced Syrians to their country, especially since the reports of humanitarian and international organisations showed that 80% of them do want to return.”

“The Parliamentary elections will be conducted on time, based on a new electoral system, that reflects the citizen’s true vision,” Aoun said, stressing that, “the Lebanese have overcome the circumstances surrounding the resignation of Prime Minister, Saad Hariri, on Nov 4, owing to their solidarity and unity.”

President Aoun conveyed his greetings to French President, Emmanuel Macron, thanking his “efforts for the sake of helping Lebanon” and hoped to “welcome him in Apr, during his visit to Beirut.”

“The UN’s demand that Lebanon be a centre for dialogue among cultures, religions and races in the world, stems from its [Lebanon’s] cultural, religious and cultural characteristics, which are not available in any other country,” he said.
