Mashnouq from London: The sole option is to counter terrorism
On the second day of his visit to London, Interior and Municipalities Minister, Nuhad Mashnouq, followed up with British officials the repercussions of the security situation in light of the terrorist bombings in Brussels.
Minister Mashnouq stressed that his priority upon his return to Beirut shall be allocated “to addressing the security gaps at the Beirut airport, due to their gravity,” indicating that these gaps may be parallel to those which existed in Sharm el-Sheikh airport, and caused the bombing of the Russian aircraft, according to western reports.
Mashnouq pointed out that he met with Airport Security Apparatus Commander, Brigadier George Doumit, who is currently in the British capital to on a training course, and he gave him the necessary instructions to “raise the security preparedness at Beirut airport, in addition to the demand of the various security services to raise the utmost degrees of caution and vigilance and tighten precautionary measures.”
On the other hand, Mashnouq met in London with British International Development Secretary Justine Greening, whereby they discussed the security at Beirut Airport.
Mashnouq underlined that “the sole option to counter terrorism is more security cooperation and coordination among the various European, Arab and international sides in the fight against extremism.”
The Minister also indicated that the main topic of discussion with Greening has been the mechanism of the implementation of the decisions adopted by the London Donors’ Conference related to addressing the Syrian refugee crisis in Lebanon.
