Caretaker State Minister for the Displaced, Mouein Merehbi, on Thursday highlighted the necessity of cooperation and coordination between the Lebanese state and the United Nations in order to organize the safe return of Syrian refugees to their homeland.

“The Lebanese government must work on their return under UN auspices,” he stressed.

Merehbi made these remarks during a conference organized by the Holy Spirit University in Kaslik (USEK), in presence of UNHCR Representative Mireille Girard, and Swiss Ambassador to Lebanon, Monika Schmutz Kirkoz.

In her intervention, Ambassador Kirkoz revealed that the Swiss Embassy had been working since August 2017 with the different political parties and spiritual and academic figures to tackle Lebanon’s capacity amid the presence of Syrian refugees.

She also hailed Lebanon’s ability to manage the refugee crisis on its soil, adding that Switzerland has supported Lebanon with nearly $130 million in that respect.
