Multiple civilians killed in a suicide bombing in Daraa city, October 28

A so-far unidentified suicide bomber blew himself up (using, we believe, an explosive belt) in a house where several civilians were present in al-Araba’in neighbourhood in the Daraa al-Balad area of Daraa city on October 28, 2022. Four civilians were killed, while five others sustained serious injuries.

The four civilians killed have been identified as 64-year-old Yasin Ahmad al-Falouji, 45-year-old Ahmad Mohammad Fandi Abazid, 42-year-old Malik Sami Abazid, and 36-year-old Malik Ali Abazid. The four victims were all locals from the Daraa a-Balad area of Daraa city.

SNHR notes that the house where the bombing took place is owned by Ghassan Akram Abazid, a former commander of an armed opposition faction, who sustained serious injuries in the bombing.

The area is controlled by Syrian regime forces. SNHR is still trying to locate eyewitnesses and survivors to obtain more information about the incident.

We condemn all bombings that target civilians through heartless indiscriminate killings. We call on the controlling parties to uphold their responsibilities for protecting civilians living in areas under their control, and to launch an investigation into this incident and to make its findings known to the public. Syria will never have true stability without a true political transition process to implement democracy under a concrete timetable.
