PARLIAMENTARY DEFENSE COMMITTEE TACKLES NATIONAL SECURITY, SYRIAN REFUGEE CRISIS

The Parliamentary Committee for National Defense, Interior, and Municipalities convened on Monday, chaired by MP Jihad Samad, with Caretaker Minister of Interior and Municipalities, Judge Bassam Mawlawi, and other members present.

During the session, security officials affirmed that despite recent crimes, security in Lebanon remains stable. They highlighted the recent cases, including Pascal Sleiman’s murder, attributing it as a criminal act rather than a political one.

Additionally, the committee discussed the Syrian refugee crisis, with the General Security urging the revival of a 2003 memorandum with UNHCR to apply Lebanese laws while respecting international standards.

The committee emphasized support for all security apparatuses and called for the issuance of a law similar to the 2003 memorandum to manage the Syrian refugee crisis. It also stressed the need for a unified government strategy and coordination with the Syrian state for the safe return of refugees.
