PRESIDENT RECEIVES KUBIS, SAYS SUBURBS AND KOUSSAYA ATTACKS VIOLATE RESOLUTION 1701
President of the Republic, Michel Aoun, on Monday told UN Special Representative in Lebanon to the UN Secretary-General, Jan Kubis, that Lebanon, which has lodged a complaint to the Security Council in response to the Israeli aggression on Beirut’s southern suburbs of Beirut, reserves the right to defend itself.
What happened is a declaration of war that allows us to resort to our right to defend our sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity, Aoun justified.
The attack on the southern suburbs, as well as on Koussaya region along the Lebanese-Syrian border, violates the first paragraph of UN Security Council Resolution No. 1701, and what applies to Lebanon in this resolution should also apply to Israel,” the President told Kubis.
I have reiterated to you that Lebanon will not fire a single shot from the border unless it is in self-defense, and what happened yesterday allows us to exercise this right, he added.
Aoun expressed his fear that Israel’s aggression will lead to a deterioration in the situation, especially if it were repeated. This would push Lebanon to defend its sovereignty.
We do not accept to be threatened by anyone in whichever way, bearing in mind that we are a people who seek peace, not war, Aoun stated.
The extension for the international forces operating in the south before the end of this month has become urgent and necessary to maintain stability on the border,” Aoun maintained.
