PRETORIA, The South African Department of International Relations and Co-operation says it is doing its best to ensure the release of South African photo-journalist Shiraaz Mohamed, who has allegedly been kidnapped in Syria.

Thirty eight-year-old Mohamed was kidnapped near the Turkish border on Tuesday.

Department spokesperson Nelson Kgwete said here Sunday that the South African embassy in Lebanon was working with the Syrian authorities to facilitate Mohamed’s release.

The South African Government has evacuated its personnel from the Embassy in Damascas due to a deteriorating situation in that country and all our personnel are based in Lebanon,” explained Kgwete.

“As a result, we do not have personnel on the ground in Syria but we do have contacts in that country and our officials from Lebanon will ensure that they liaise with all the relevant authorities to ensure that we get to the bottom of this kidnapping incident.
