Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Bechara Butros al-Rahi, headed Monday the annual Mass for France at the patriarchal edifice in Bkirki, where he hoped that “it will forever remain a caller for peace that is based on justice, human rights, dignity, democratic values and cultural diversity.”

“We are hereby holding this Mass for France to wish this beloved nation prosperity and peace, which are blessings of Jesus Christ the Savior,” said al-Rahi, adding that “this Mass is also a recalling of the historic friendship between France and the Maronites, as well as a confirmation of its presence in Lebanon and the Middle East.”

In turn, French Ambassador to Lebanon, Emmanuel Bonn, thanked the Patriarch for this annual tradition of celebrating Mass for France, saying “this Mass expresses the historic relation between France and Maronites, and reflects Lebanon’s significant qualities, namely its hospitality, loyalty, generosity and many more.”

“We are indeed passing through a period of gloominess, filled with suffering and dangerous threats, whilst crises continue to yield grief and sorrow in the Middle East,” Bonn went on.

“It is for the sake of these suffering people that France has engaged in the war against Daesh and terrorists, in order to achieve political solutions in Syria and Iraq,” said Bonn.

He added: “It is also for the same reason that France has restored its initiative of establishing a Palestinian State coexisting in peace and security with the State of Israel.”

“What is important at this stage is to prepare for the future and ensure the safety of people and all groups, which is a difficult task amidst all that is happening in the region,” Bonn indicated.

“France is especially concerned about Lebanon, for this country is carrying burdens that exceed its capabilities,” said Bonn, stressing that “Lebanon shall remain a total priority for France, which is well-aware of its historic duty towards this country and wants unity, stability, security and prosperity for all the Lebanese.”
