Maronite Patriarch, Cardinal Mar Bechara Boutros Rahi, inaugurated on Monday the works of the sacred synod, in presence of the Maronite bishops of Lebanon and the Diaspora.

The prelate delivered a speech on liturgical reforms, the situation of parishes, pastoral visits, and other national issues.

Touching on the Lebanese situation, Rahi called for speeding up the formation of a new government that enjoys a spirit of national responsibility, and one that’s far from quota sharing.

“The government must be able to carry out the required reforms in all sectors, not to mention that this is a primary condition for obtaining financial aid for donations and long-term loans, as per Rome and Paris conferences,” Rahi said.

In the same vein, the Maronite Patriarch pushed for unifying national efforts regarding the return of Syrian refugees to their motherland, calling on the international community to help these displaced persons rebuild their homes.

The patriarch also called on Lebanese officials to revoke the naturalization decree, noting that the decree weakened trust in officials.

The leader of the Maronite church finally called on political leaders to build trust among each other, in accordance with the spirit of the national pact that characterizes Lebanon. “This pact is marked by freedom, equality, and coexistence between Christians and Muslims.”

It is to note that the works of the synod will continue until Saturday, June 16th. It will be closed by a final communique followed by a mass.
