Sabbagh: The Security Council shouldn’t be exploited for political purposes

New York, SANA- Some countries should abandon their hostile and wrong approach towards Syria, and they should not exploit the Security Council’s deliberations regarding the so-called “chemical file” in Syria for political purposes, Syria’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador, Bassam Sabbagh said.

Sabbagh’s remarks came during a session of the Security Council on the “chemical file” in Syria held Monday.

Sabbagh stressed that the Technical Secretariat of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons(OPCW) should deal with impartiality and respect with the scientific explanations offered by the Syrian National Committee on some issues that are under discussion.

Sabbagh said the world’s celebration on International Day for Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Awareness on Sunday recalls the importance of efforts exerted to get rid of weapons of mass destruction whose usage is considered a crime against humanity.

He noted that Syria witnessed, on March 19th, 2013, the first case of using chemical weapons, as terrorist groups fired a toxic chemicals shell at Khan al-Asal area in Aleppo province.

Sabbagh added that the terrorist organizations, in coordination with “White Helmets”, continue to prepare false flag chemical attacks to accuse the Syrian Government.

The Ambassador stressed that Syria took a strategic and voluntary decision in 2013 to join to the Chemical Weapons Convention, and it also was one of the first countries to join the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and cooperated with the (OPCW) by destroying all its chemical stockpile and its production facilities in 2014.

Sabbagh affirmed the readiness of the Syrian National Committee to communicate with its counterpart at the OPCW to prepare for a high-level meeting between Foreign and Expatriates Minister, Chairman of Syrian National Committee and the OPCW Director General, as the committee looks forward to holding this meeting as soon as possible.

He slammed the politicization of the OPCW work, referring to the unprofessional reports issued by Technical Secretariat which have been based on misleading information that allowed Western countries to use it as a platform to target Syria.

Sabbagh underscored the need for some countries to abandon their wrong approach towards Syria and their attempt to stir up public opinion to exploit the Security Council’s deliberations on the “chemical file” for political purposes.
