Former Prime Minister Tammam Salam urged the West to spare Lebanon the burden of regional developments, such as Hezbollah’s implication in the war in Syria, despite the dissociation policy adopted by the consecutive Lebanese governments.

“Hezbollah takes effective part in the Lebanese political life and it represents a large and key fraction of the Lebanese people. However, its interference in Syria and regional commitments have taken a toll on Lebanon,” Salam told an interview with CNN.

Moreover, he said that the recent visit of Lebanon’s former prime ministers to Saudi Arabia was coordinated with Premier Saad Hariri, adding that the three officials conveyed to the Saudis their concern over regional tensions and their reverberations on Lebanon.

He also maintained that Saudi Arabia was a key player in the region, highlighting the Kingdom’s support for Lebanon, especially through Taif Agreement which put an end to the Lebanese civil war.
