Sarraf says no transparency in UNHCR’s work, rebuffs naturalization
Caretaker National Defense Minister, Yaacoub Sarraf, on Wednesday denounced what he described as lack of transparency in the work of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
In light of the simmering refugee crisis in Lebanon, the Minister pointed to the absence of real and effective assistance to the Lebanese state in order to modernize its infrastructure so as to help it tolerate the huge burden of refugee presence on its territories.
“This makes of Lebanon the first and biggest contributor and donor; this is not to mention attempts to use this commission [UNHCR] to bog Lebanon down in regional conflicts and to blast its self-distancing policy,” the Minister explained.
“It our duty as Lebanese to reject naturalization projects which have been being imposed on us for 70 years,” Sarraf added.
“We need to focus on our Lebanese entity, which is a remarkable example of coexistence among neighboring countries, instead of trying to destroy it with the attempt to integrate refugees into our society,” the statement read.
The Minister also sounded the alarm on the likely ramifications of naturalization on Lebanon’s entity and national identity.
“It is only normal to ask for securing a dignified return of refugees to safe Syrian regions,” Sarraf said.
