Two Austrians freed by Iran

The Austrian Foreign Ministry announced Friday that two citizens detained in a Tehran prison were released.

It said in a statement that Kamran Al-Qadri and Masoud Musaheb had been arrested on “flimsy charges in Iran several years ago.” They have been freshly released and are now on their way back to Vienna, the minister said.

The release was fruit of ongoing diplomatic initiatives, some of which were discreet. According to the Austrian Press Agency, the two Austrians, who are of Iranian origin, were imprisoned by Iran for years in poor conditions.

Austrian Foreign Minister Alexander Schallenberg thanked the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs for its contribution to the release of the Austrians. He also thanked the staff of the Austrian embassy in Tehran for their role in this process.
