Washington: U.S. Congresswoman Elizabeth Warren of the Democratic Party and Republican Representative Joe Wilson have jointly sent a letter to the U.S. Secretary of State and the Treasury Secretary, advocating for the easing of U.S. sanctions on Syria. Their appeal emphasizes the need to support Syria’s reconstruction and promote regional stability following the fall of the Assad regime.
According to Syrian Arab News Agency, the bipartisan letter highlights that the sanctions, which were imposed over a decade ago targeting a regime that is no longer in power, now threaten to undermine U.S. national security objectives. The lawmakers argue that these sanctions hinder Syria’s reconstruction efforts and could potentially destabilize the region by encouraging migration and reliance on illicit activities.
The representatives further warned that maintaining these sanctions could allow Iran and Russia to reassert their influence in Syria. They stressed the importance of a clear roadmap, detailing specific actions Syrian authorities need to undertake to secure further sanctions relief beyond immediate adjustments.
