WASHINGTON, — The US-led coalition and Russia on Wednesday expressed commitment to their memorandum of understanding (MoU) on flight safety in the Syrian airspace.

The conversation, conducted via video conference between US and Russian military officials was described as “constructive” as they agreed to continue safety discussions in this format in the future, according to a statement by the Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook.

The meeting follows previous video conferences between the US Department of Defense and the Russian Ministry of Defense on this topic.

On the US side, the talks were co-chaired by Acting Assistant Secretary for International Security Affairs Elissa Slotkin and Joint Staff Director for Strategic Plans and Policy Lt. Gen. Kenneth F. McKenzie.

The agreement outlines the means to avoid accidents and unintended confrontation between coalition and Russian forces whenever the two sides operate in close proximity.
