Some 60 young Kuwaitis set sail aboard dhows early on Saturday from the Arabian Gulf Road shore kicking off the 32nd diving festival, following example of the ancestors who earned bread from the sea.

The “nawakheza,” (ship captains in local dialect), seamen, divers and rowers sailed from the shore, overwhelmed with enthusiasm and passions to re-live memories of grandfathers who used to heavily depend the sea to make a living, dive for pearls with meagre tools and sail to remote countries for goods’ bartering and trade.

The forefathers bore hardships of these times before the oil boom that brought with it wealth and a different lifestyle that lessened dependence on physical effort.
